IN THE NEWS

  • In anticipation of Trump’s big speech at the Republican Convention tonight, make sure you’re equipped with the facts. Trump will be giving this campaign speech from the White House — which, much like a handful of other RNC speeches, is likely in violation of the Hatch Act. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, however, doesn’t think people care enough to hold his boss accountable. Read up on all the potential Hatch Act violations at the RNC, then check out this new piece out today from CAP Action that breaks down how Trump has the worst economic record in modern history.
  • In an historic act of collective organizing, professional athletes across the country went on strike last night to protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake and the subsequent deadly shooting of protesters by a militant white supremacist on Tuesday. Milwaukee Bucks players kicked off the strike when they refused to play just before their game was scheduled to begin. The opposing team joined in solidarity, refusing to accept the Bucks’ forfeit. Before long, players across the NBA and WNBA were following suit. Washington Mystics players walked past TV cameras wearing shirts with seven holes in the back to represent the seven bullets shot at Jacob Blake’s back by Kenosha, Wisconsin police. Within a few hours, players from four major professional sports leagues had announced their intention to join the strike.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

  • Hurricane Laura slammed the Gulf Coast last night as a Category 4 storm. Rain and winds of up to 150 miles per hour left a trail of damage across the Louisiana and Texas shoreline. At least three people have died as a result of the storm, hundreds of thousands are without homes and without power, and Louisiana’s governor reported officials are struggling to contain a large fire at a chemical plant near Lake Charles.
  • Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos just keeps getting richer. As of Wednesday afternoon, Jeff Bezos became the first person ever to be worth $200 billion.
